I have always been a math and science girl.

I unsurprisingly graduated from college with a math and computer science degree.  Though I come from pretty artistic familial “stock,” I have always considered myself to be the logical, orderly one. I spent most of my life believing my older sister was the only one blessed with our ancestral, free spirited, creative nature.

And yet, I have wanted to be a potter for as long as I can remember.

My mother was a potter, as was her father before her.  My grandfather gave up ceramics to support his family in the much more lucrative field of medicine. My mother moved on to the social services, dismantling her home studio long before I ever got to put my young hands into her clay.

And yet, the seed of my secret desire was planted.

Life has a way of steering us in certain directions and mine always took me toward what I had an aptitude for – computers and technology.  In 2013, as my nest emptied, I found that I finally had some time to think about my own passions and desires.  The thought of investigating my elusive pottery dream resurfaced.

And so, my journey into creating with my hands began.

When I first started ceramics, I would have classified myself as a functional potter, creating pieces which I felt provided a sense of comfort and coming home.  There is something so unbelievably satisfying about using daily that which you have created with your own hands. As I have ventured further into my odyssey with clay, I've enjoyed incorporating other crafting and artistic loves into my work. While I think I will always value creating every day, practical pieces, I have found immense pleasure in challenging myself to expand into more sculptured and exploratory work.

Artist Statements

While my schooling has been in the STEM fields, I have always enjoyed artistic pursuits as a means to exercise the creative side of my brain. Exploring different mediums and seeing how techniques from one discipline can be applied to another is of particular interest to me, which has led me to dabble in an extensive amount of art forms over the years.

I generally enjoy the process of creating no matter the medium; however, there are a few loves that I keep coming back to. Paper and fiber arts are two that I find particularly fulfilling. The satisfaction and joy of transforming simple, everyday objects, such as paper, into beautiful, intricate creations has captured, and kept, my interest since childhood. I feel I will never be done exploring all the avenues art has to offer.
